Shai Gilgeous-Alexander Wins NBA MVP

Oklahoma City Thunder star Shai Gilgeous-Alexander was named the NBA’s Most Valuable Player for the 2024–25 season on Wednesday, May 21, marking a significant milestone in his basketball career. The 26-year-old guard led the league in scoring, averaging 32.7 points per game, and was instrumental in guiding the Thunder to a league-best 68–14 record .

During his MVP acceptance speech, Gilgeous-Alexander became emotional as he paid tribute to his wife, Hailey Summers. Addressing her directly, he said, “I wouldn’t be the man I am, I wouldn’t be the player I am, I wouldn’t be the father I am without you, so thank you for that.” Hailey, holding their one-year-old son Ares, looked on from the audience as he expressed his gratitude for her unwavering support.

Gilgeous-Alexander’s journey to MVP has been marked by consistent improvement and dedication. After finishing as the runner-up in MVP voting the previous season, he elevated his performance, leading the Thunder not only to the top of the standings but also to their first Maurice Podoloff Trophy, awarded to the team with the best regular-season record.

His MVP win continues a trend of international players receiving the honor, as he becomes the second Canadian-born player to earn the award, following Steve Nash. This marks the seventh consecutive year an international player has been named MVP, highlighting the global impact on the NBA.

As the Thunder advance in the playoffs, currently competing in the Western Conference Finals, Gilgeous-Alexander’s leadership and performance remain pivotal to their championship aspirations.
